My Thoughts on The Righteous Player(s)
"The Righteous Player(s)" is a web novel that I've been diving into, and it's been quite the ride. Overall, I'd say it's a mixed bag with some brilliant concepts weighed down by execution issues. It's a novel that has the potential to be truly great, but falls short in several areas.
First Impressions
Initially, I found myself struggling with the translation quality. Some sentences felt clunky and awkward, making it difficult to fully immerse myself in the story. It felt like I was wading through molasses at times. However, I persevered, and I’m glad I did. I've noticed that the translation improves significantly later on, which is a huge relief. The early chapters definitely need some polishing.
What Works Well
The core concept of the story is undeniably intriguing. The idea of a cunning protagonist, Annan, who manipulates players in a world filled with curses and evil gods is genuinely captivating. I really enjoy the strategic elements and the mystery surrounding the "Nightmares" or dungeons. These aren't your typical hack-and-slash scenarios; they require deduction and puzzle-solving, which adds a unique layer of depth. The world-building, while sometimes delivered through info dumps, is rich and detailed. The author has clearly put a lot of thought into the lore and the power system. I found myself drawn into the intricate web of deities, curses, and hidden agendas. The MC's apathetic and scheming nature is also a point in the books favor. It's a nice change from the usual goody-two-shoes protagonist.
Areas of Concern
Despite its strengths, "The Righteous Player(s)" has some notable flaws. The pacing can be incredibly slow, with excessive exposition and internal monologues that bog down the narrative. There's definitely a "tell, don't show" problem at times. Also, the author tends to over-explain character motivations, which can feel repetitive and unnecessary. The power system, while detailed, can also be confusing, with a lot of information thrown at you at once.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have mentioned issues with the ending, describing it as rushed and unsatisfying. They felt that certain plot threads and character relationships, particularly Annan's interactions with the gods, were not explored in enough detail. It's disappointing to hear that the ending doesn't quite live up to the potential of the earlier parts of the story.
Final Verdict
"The Righteous Player(s)" is a flawed but ultimately worthwhile read. If you're willing to overlook the translation issues in the beginning and the occasional pacing problems, you'll find a compelling story with a unique premise and a fascinating world. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars. It's not a masterpiece, but it's definitely a novel that has kept me engaged.
