My Thoughts on The Raven Dark Hero ~I Longed to Be a Hero but Due to This and That I Became the Last Boss?!~
First Impressions
The premise of The Raven Dark Hero definitely grabbed my attention. A seemingly powerless protagonist who dreams of being a hero, only to be pushed down a darker path? Sounds like a recipe for a compelling anti-hero story. I was intrigued by the potential for exploring moral ambiguity and the consequences of a world that doesn't always reward good intentions.
What Works Well
Initially, the story seems to deliver on its promise. The early chapters, where the protagonist grapples with his powerlessness and faces a dark revelation, are engaging. I found the awakening of his abilities after a particularly brutal fight to be a satisfying turning point. The revenge aspect, at least in the beginning, is presented in a way that feels justified, adding weight to the protagonist's descent. Some readers have also pointed out that the darkness threatening to consume the main character is fleshed out reasonably well, allowing him to retain some semblance of humanity.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the story seems to stumble as it progresses. A common complaint is the protagonist's personality shifts. Many feel his character becomes inconsistent, flipping between a "goody two-shoes" and a battle-manic at the author's convenience. This inconsistency makes it difficult to connect with him and invest in his journey. The "twists" also seem predictable, lacking any real surprise or impact. The author introduces plot points and character developments that feel telegraphed and unoriginal. Another area of concern is the execution of the world-building. While the story attempts to explore the nuances of good and evil, the writing and pacing make it difficult to become invested in the broader narrative.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several readers have mentioned issues with the protagonist's reaction to killing. The impact of taking lives feels underwhelming, making his character feel unrealistic. The transition from a killer, even under the influence of an ability, to a naive teenager avoiding violence feels jarring and unearned. There's also criticism of the organization the MC joins, which is built up as a major force but is easily located and dismantled.
Final Verdict
The Raven Dark Hero has an interesting concept, but its execution leaves much to be desired. While the initial chapters offer promise, the inconsistent character development, predictable plot twists, and lackluster world-building ultimately detract from the overall experience. It might be enjoyable as "entertaining shlock" if you don't think about it too hard, but if you're looking for a deeply engaging and well-written story, this might not be it.
