My Thoughts on The Medicine Jar is Loved but Not Abused
This novel, "The Medicine Jar is Loved but Not Abused," definitely left me with a lot to think about. It's a modern-day transmigration story with a "weak protagonist and domineering CEO" vibe, but with some interesting twists that kept me engaged. While it may not be groundbreaking, I found it to be a memorable read.
First Impressions
Initially, the plot felt a bit slow, but as I delved deeper, the story picked up pace. The MC, Shen Ning, is quite a character. He's transmigrated into the original protagonist of a novel, but he's surprisingly resigned to his situation. He doesn't try to change his fate, which is a refreshing change from the usual transmigration tropes. The ML is cold, but there's a sweetness to him that peeks through. Together, they make a pretty funny and endearing team.
What Works Well
I really enjoyed the comedic undertones and the bickering dynamic between the MC and ML. The MC's antics and the ML's reactions were often hilarious. The plot also has some well-done reveals that completely change the context of the story, which I always appreciate. Plus, the fact that the MC brought his allergies and illness with him when he transmigrated added an unexpected layer of complexity to the story. It definitely made their relationship and the ML's protectiveness all the more understandable.
Areas of Concern
One thing I felt was that the characters could be frustrating at times. The MC, in particular, seemed to accept abuse and misunderstandings without much resistance, which tested my patience. I wanted him to stand up for himself more! Also, the power dynamic between the MC and ML felt imbalanced at times, making it feel more like a servant/master or father/son relationship rather than an equal partnership.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, let's talk about the ML's backstory. It's revealed later in the story that his older brother was gay and faced terrible discrimination from their parents, ultimately leading to a tragic end. This is why the ML enters into contracted relationships with men – to spite his parents. This adds a lot of depth to his character and explains his cold demeanor. Also, the MC is dying.
Final Verdict
Despite some flaws, "The Medicine Jar is Loved but Not Abused" is a story I think I'll remember. The sweet romance, unique plot elements, and the MC and ML's interesting dynamic make it worth a read. If you enjoy mature yaoi stories with complex characters and a good dose of humor, give this one a try. I'm giving it a solid 4/5 stars.
