My Thoughts on The Great Ruler
"The Great Ruler" promised a grand xuanhuan adventure, and while it had moments that hooked me, I ultimately found myself a bit underwhelmed. It's a complete story, which is a plus, but the journey was a mixed bag.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the premise of Mu Chen, a young man with a mysterious past and undeniable talent navigating a world of cultivation. The early stages held promise, hinting at a deeper story and a unique cultivation system. I was eager to uncover the secrets surrounding his background and see how he'd rise to the top.
What Works Well
Mu Chen himself is a likable protagonist. He's portrayed as intelligent, aware of his limitations, and not overly arrogant. His relationship with Luo Li is also a highlight, offering a sweet and relatively innocent romance that avoids the more distasteful tropes sometimes found in the genre. I also appreciated the author's attempt to connect this story to their previous works, "Battle Through the Heavens" and "Wu Dong Qian Kun," by including familiar characters and references. The translation is also well done.
Areas of Concern
However, as the story progressed, I found myself growing increasingly frustrated with repetitive plotlines. The formula of tournament, offense, hidden location, power-up, and steamroll became predictable and tiresome. The constant need for the MC to find "super rare" items only to stumble upon them within a few chapters felt contrived and diminished the sense of accomplishment.
I also struggled with the apparent inconsistencies in the main character's personality. While he's often described as ruthless, he frequently lets enemies escape, which felt like a plot device to prolong conflicts rather than a genuine character trait. I found myself agreeing with the readers who felt the story lacked depth and originality. Many side characters appear as filler, with little backstory, and world building is minimal. The constant need for the author to describe female characters as "beautiful", "slender", or "sexy" also got old very quickly.

Some readers were disappointed by how certain plot threads were handled, particularly the lack of resolution for characters connected to the MC from previous novels. The rushed ending and the feeling that the author sacrificed character development for the sake of plot progression also left some unsatisfied.
Final Verdict
"The Great Ruler" has its moments and might appeal to readers new to the xuanhuan genre. However, the repetitive plot, inconsistencies, and lack of depth ultimately prevented it from reaching its full potential. It's an okay read, but don't expect it to break any new ground. I'd give it a 3 out of 5.
