My Thoughts on The Daily Life of Farming and Raising Children in Ancient Mountain Residences
This novel promised a cozy slice-of-life in ancient times, and while it delivered on that front, it also threw in some unexpectedly dark and compelling elements that kept me hooked. It's a story about survival, family, and finding humanity amidst chaos, and I found myself surprisingly invested in the journey.
First Impressions
Initially, I went in expecting a lighthearted transmigration story, where the protagonist easily solves all problems with her modern knowledge. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find a much more grounded and realistic portrayal of life for commoners during a time of war and political instability. The focus on daily struggles, farming, and slow-burn romance was refreshing.
What Works Well
One of the strongest aspects of this novel is its character development, particularly that of Shen Jin. Starting as a somewhat annoying and immature child, he undergoes a remarkable transformation into a responsible and caring young man. His growth is truly heartwarming, and I found myself rooting for him more than the main characters at times. He really does steal the show!
I also appreciated the author's depiction of the hardships faced by commoners during war. The novel doesn't shy away from the harsh realities of starvation, disease, and the moral compromises people make to survive. The main character's ability to use her knowledge to improve their lives, without magically inventing everything, felt believable and well-executed. The slow-burn romance between the leads was sweet, and I liked how supportive they were of each other. It was a refreshing change from the often-overdone tropes in this genre. The unity and loyalty within the core family group were also a major draw, creating a sense of warmth and hope amidst the difficulties.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the novel overall, the ending felt a bit rushed and left some loose ends. I would have liked to see more closure for certain characters, particularly after the main characters journey to the capital. Also, while the slice-of-life aspect was appealing, the pacing could be slow at times, with a focus on minor characters that sometimes detracted from the main storyline.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several reviewers mentioned the presence of cannibalism in the story, particularly during depictions of wartime tragedies. This is a significant trigger warning for those sensitive to that topic. Additionally, the tragic fate of Shen Jin's little sister is a particularly heartbreaking moment that stays with you.
Final Verdict
Despite some minor flaws, "The Daily Life of Farming and Raising Children in Ancient Mountain Residences" is a worthwhile read. The compelling characters, realistic portrayal of ancient life, and heartwarming family dynamics make it a memorable story. If you enjoy slice-of-life novels with a touch of drama and aren't afraid of darker themes, I highly recommend giving this one a try.
