My Thoughts on The Court Magician Who Had Her Achievements Dismissed and Was a Hobbyist Puppeteer Becomes Extremely Strong – Even if She’s Told to Come Back Because Her Workplace is Struggling, It’s More Fun to Expand an Undeveloped Land with Her Childhood Friends…
Okay, that title is a mouthful, right? But beyond the ludicrous length, there's a surprisingly enjoyable story buried within. I went in expecting another generic "kicked out and becomes OP" narrative, and while it does follow some familiar tropes, it also manages to carve out its own unique space.
First Impressions
Initially, I was a bit wary. We've all seen this setup before: an underestimated protagonist, snotty nobles getting their comeuppance, and the eventual triumph of the underdog. The beginning felt a little rough around the edges, and I wondered if I was in for another predictable ride.
What Works Well
What really grabbed me was the blend of genres. This isn't just a fantasy story; it throws in mecha, a healthy dose of yuri romance, and even some post-apocalyptic elements for good measure. The world-building, while not always the most subtle, is engaging, and I found myself invested in Peria's journey as she develops her puppetry skills and builds a new life with her childhood friends.
The characters, while sometimes leaning into stereotypes, are generally likeable and their enthusiasm is infectious. I appreciated the emphasis on teamwork; the side characters aren't just there to prop up the MC, they grow and develop alongside her, contributing to the overall strength of the group. The romance, while frequent, felt organic and added a layer of warmth to the narrative. I found it quite fun to read how the MC's new life improved while the old environment declined.
Areas of Concern
The tonal whiplash can be a bit jarring at times. The story swings from lighthearted comedy to moments of surprising gore and darkness, which might not be for everyone. Also, some of the villainous nobles felt a bit one-dimensional, acting evil for the sake of being evil, which detracted from the overall experience.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have mentioned that the ending feels a bit mixed up in terms of order, which is a valid criticism, but it didn't ruin the experience for me. Also, the shift in plot can be a bit jarring. The darker part of this story hides behind its psuedo-mecha and the moments of childhood friends flirting with each other. One major complaint is that, personally, the twist wasn't foreshadowed enough.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "The Court Magician…" is a fun and engaging read. It's a weird, wonderful mix of genres that somehow manages to work. If you're looking for a lighthearted yet surprisingly dark fantasy with a strong female lead, giant mecha, and plenty of yuri romance, this might just be the novel for you. I'd recommend giving it a try, just be prepared for a few tonal shifts and a possibly confusing ending.
