My Thoughts on That Time I’ve Seen Through a Beautiful Gyaru’s Punishment Game Confession, I Forgave Her but She Started to Get Closer
This title is certainly a mouthful, and after diving in, I can say the story itself is... well, it exists. It's not terrible, but it's also not setting any new standards for the rom-com genre. It feels very much like a fairly generic slice-of-life story with a heavy dose of school romance.
First Impressions
My initial impression was that this would be a fun, lighthearted read, but the early chapters felt a little clunky. The premise is definitely there – average guy, popular girl, forced confession – but the execution felt a bit off. I was hoping for more immediate chemistry between the leads, but it took a while to develop.
What Works Well
I did appreciate the author's attempt to portray the male lead's reluctance. He's not immediately smitten, which is a refreshing change from some other similar stories. The idea of him being "too kind to refuse" is interesting and creates a unique dynamic. It's clear the author is trying to build a slow-burn romance, focusing on the characters' interactions and gradual development of feelings. There's also a certain charm in its simplicity; it's a low-stakes, easy read that you can pick up and put down without feeling lost.
Areas of Concern
However, the pacing and character development are significant issues. The MC comes off as exceptionally bland and passive. His lack of agency made it difficult for me to invest in his character or root for him. I also found the supporting characters, particularly the FMC's best friend, to be overly pushy. Their attempts to force the relationship felt contrived and, at times, actively detracted from the story. The misunderstandings, while a staple of the genre, felt forced and frustratingly repetitive.
Final Verdict
Overall, That Time I’ve Seen Through a Beautiful Gyaru’s Punishment Game Confession, I Forgave Her but She Started to Get Closer is a decent, if unremarkable, read. If you're looking for a light, undemanding romance and are willing to overlook some of its flaws, it might be worth your time. However, if you're seeking depth, compelling characters, or a unique plot, you might want to look elsewhere. I'd give it a solid 3/5 – enjoyable enough to pass the time, but not particularly memorable.
