My Thoughts on Takamura-kun is Cursed
"Takamura-kun is Cursed" dives headfirst into the chaotic world of gender-bending curses, school life, and budding (sometimes confusing) romance. Honestly, I went in expecting a fairly standard setup, and while the core premise is familiar, the execution definitely had its moments.
First Impressions
The initial hook is pretty strong: a girl wakes up on her 17th birthday to find herself transformed into a guy, thanks to a family curse. To break it, she needs to kiss her crush before she turns 20. The nonchalant attitude of the main character, Takamura, towards this whole situation immediately grabbed my attention. It's refreshing to see a protagonist who, while shocked, doesn't immediately descend into hysterics and accepts her new reality with a surprising amount of chill.
What Works Well
The strength of this novel lies in its characters. Takamura is a genuinely likable protagonist, cool and collected as she navigates the complexities of being a guy in high school. The supporting cast, particularly the "clingy ikemen boy," adds a layer of humor and romance that kept me engaged. I also appreciated the lighthearted tone and the way the story tackles the gender-bender trope. It doesn't take itself too seriously, which allows for some genuinely funny and heartwarming moments. Several readers praised the MC's personality, and the way the FL falls for him/her, separate from the curse.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the premise and the characters, I have to admit that the plot felt a bit rushed, especially towards the end. The lore and origins of the curse, which are introduced later in the story, felt somewhat crammed in. Also, the ending, while avoiding the typical "true love's kiss" trope, felt a little incomplete. Several plot threads are left hanging, which can be frustrating for readers looking for a more conclusive resolution. The character of Chiharu, while intended to be amusing, can come across as annoying and selfish, especially in the latter half of the story.
