My Thoughts on Sword Edge

"Sword Edge" is a novel that initially grabbed my attention with its unique blend of sports, school life, and yaoi themes. The premise of a reborn Olympic athlete returning to his younger self after his best friend's death, armed with the knowledge of unrequited love, felt like a promising setup for a compelling story.

First Impressions

Right away, I was drawn in by the early chapters focusing on the MC's adjustment to his new life in America and his rekindled friendship with the ML. The depiction of their childhood relationship was undeniably adorable, and I appreciated the coming-of-age aspect, particularly given the early 2000s setting. I was also intrigued by the potential exploration of racism and prejudice during that time period.

What Works Well

The strongest aspect of "Sword Edge," for me, lies in the characters and their interactions. The MC, despite some flaws, is generally likable, and I enjoyed watching him navigate his second chance at life. The initial focus on their friendship and the sweet, nurturing dynamic between the MC and ML was definitely a highlight. The fencing element, while not always deeply explored, added a unique flavor to the story. I also appreciated the presence of well-developed side characters and villains, adding depth to the narrative.

Areas of Concern

However, as I delved deeper, some issues began to surface. I found myself increasingly frustrated by the MC's denseness regarding the ML's feelings, especially considering his past-life knowledge. The plot seemed to lose focus, juggling fencing, romance, and family drama without fully developing any of them. Some found the ML's behavior, especially his possessiveness and occasional lack of respect for consent, to be troubling. I can definitely see how that could be off-putting for some readers. Additionally, there were some inconsistencies in the timeline and character ages that created confusion.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Some found the non-consensual kisses with other characters to be problematic. The ending for one of the villainous characters was also criticized for lacking sufficient consequences for their actions.

Final Verdict

Overall, "Sword Edge" is a mixed bag. While it offers a heartwarming story with charming characters and a unique premise, it suffers from plot inconsistencies, questionable character behavior, and a frustratingly dense protagonist. If you're looking for a lighthearted read with a focus on friendship and sports, you might find enjoyment here. However, be prepared for some potentially uncomfortable moments and a narrative that doesn't always live up to its initial promise. I'd give it a solid 3.5/5.
