My Thoughts on So Pure, So Flirtatious
"So Pure, So Flirtatious" is quite the rollercoaster, and I've got some mixed feelings about it. It's a completed Chinese web novel with a hefty chapter count, blending action, romance, and a whole lot of harem elements. I dove in knowing it was a bit of a mixed bag, and that's pretty much what I found.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the premise of a delinquent high schooler gaining special abilities. The story starts off fairly standard, with the MC, Yang Ming, navigating school life and getting into scrapes. Many readers point out that the beginning is slow, and I agree. It takes a while for the plot to really pick up steam, but it does eventually get there.
What Works Well
The character development is a definite highlight. Yang Ming isn't some overpowered genius from the get-go; he makes mistakes and learns from them, which is refreshing. I also appreciated the lighthearted tone. It avoids the overly tragic storylines that can plague some Chinese novels. The author, Fishman II, is known for this, and it makes for an easier, more enjoyable read overall. The action and martial arts elements become more prominent as the story progresses, adding a layer of excitement. For those who enjoy the harem genre, this novel delivers a large cast of female characters, each with their own backstories and reasons for falling for the MC.
Areas of Concern
The pacing can be a real issue. The story drags in places, especially in the middle, with what feels like endless filler chapters. Some found the sheer number of chapters overwhelming, and I can see why. Also, while the harem aspect is a selling point for some, others may find it repetitive or even problematic. The MC can come across as a bit of a hypocrite at times, and the way some of the romantic relationships develop feels rushed or forced. The MC's "superpower," his special lenses, also feels underutilized for large portions of the story, which is a shame.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have raised serious concerns about potentially problematic content, including instances of r*pe and coercion. If such themes are triggering or off-putting, proceed with extreme caution.
Final Verdict
"So Pure, So Flirtatious" is a flawed but ultimately entertaining read. If you're a fan of harem novels with martial arts elements and don't mind a slow burn and some questionable content, you might enjoy it. However, be prepared for a long journey with its fair share of ups and downs. I'd give it a tentative 3/5.
