My Thoughts on Shini Yasui Kōshaku Reijō to Shichi-nin no Kikōshi
First Impressions
"Reincarnated as a villainess" stories are a dime a dozen, so I went into Shini Yasui Kōshaku Reijō to Shichi-nin no Kikōshi with a healthy dose of skepticism. However, I quickly found myself pulled in by the unique premise and the promise of more than just your typical otome game fare. The detailed world-building and hints of mystery piqued my interest from the start, and I was eager to see how Erica would navigate her perilous situation.
What Works Well
The strongest aspect of this novel, in my opinion, is its world-building. The author has clearly put a lot of thought into the intricacies of the world, from the magic systems and political structures to the unique cultures of each country. I appreciate how the details are revealed gradually, creating a rich and immersive experience without overwhelming the reader with information dumps.
I also found Erica to be a compelling protagonist. She's intelligent and resourceful, but not unrealistically overpowered. Her past life trauma adds depth to her character and explains her cautious nature, which I found refreshing compared to some of the more dense or oblivious protagonists in similar stories. I also liked that she isn't a damsel in distress. Even though she isn't the strongest, she still tries her best to help others.
Areas of Concern
Some readers might be disappointed if they're primarily looking for romance. While there are hints of potential pairings, the focus is definitely on the action, adventure, and mystery elements.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some reviewers mentioned that Erica can appear weak or reckless at times, especially in the early arcs. Others have said that the story starts slow.
Final Verdict
Overall, I'd highly recommend Shini Yasui Kōshaku Reijō to Shichi-nin no Kikōshi to anyone who enjoys fantasy action novels with a well-developed world and intriguing characters. While the romance may be subtle and the start is slow, the unique premise, intricate plot, and satisfying character development make it a worthwhile read. It's a refreshing take on the "reincarnated as a villainess" trope, and I'm excited to see where the story goes next.
