My Thoughts on Sendai Yuusha wa Inkyou Shitai
This web novel, "Sendai Yuusha wa Inkyou Shitai," certainly had its ups and downs for me. The premise is intriguing: a former hero, summoned again, but this time he just wants to live a quiet life. The execution, however, feels a bit uneven.
First Impressions
The initial chapters hooked me. The idea of a seasoned hero trying to fade into the background after already saving the world is quite appealing. I was eager to see how he'd navigate this new, less-glamorous existence. The mystery surrounding his past and his relationships also seemed promising.
What Works Well
The world-building is decent, and I appreciate the slow reveal of the MC's backstory. Learning about his past comrades and the sacrifices he made the first time around adds depth to his character. The fight scenes, while not groundbreaking, are generally well-written and engaging. I also found the translation quality to be good, which certainly enhanced my reading experience.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, several aspects detracted from my enjoyment. The biggest issue, for me, was the MC's character. While the novel presents him as a "pervert," it often felt more like an excuse for cheap humor than genuine character development. And, while I'm not opposed to ecchi elements, the constant focus on it felt repetitive and, at times, even cringeworthy.
Another major problem for me was the pacing. Events often felt rushed or skipped over entirely, leaving me wanting more. The constant POV shifts in the second volume were also jarring and made it difficult to stay invested in the story. And some of the characters, especially the loli elf, I found extremely annoying, and I was happy when she was eventually gone.
Final Verdict
"Sendai Yuusha wa Inkyou Shitai" has potential, but it's ultimately a mixed bag. If you can overlook the problematic humor and pacing issues, there's an enjoyable story buried beneath. However, if those elements are deal-breakers for you, you might want to consider looking elsewhere. I'd give it a tentative 3 out of 5 stars. It's not terrible, but it's definitely not a must-read.
