My Thoughts on Sage Monarch

Sage Monarch... it's a novel that's definitely sparked some strong feelings among readers, myself included after diving in. It's a xuanhuan story with a lot of familiar elements, but it also tries to forge its own path, and that's where things get interesting.

First Impressions

Initially, I was drawn in by the promise of a classic cultivation story. The premise is familiar: a young man, Yang Qi, faces betrayal and hardship, but quickly finds a powerful advantage to start his journey. The translation quality, thanks to Deathblade, is a definite plus. It's easy to get lost in cultivation novels with bad translations so starting with a good one is a good sign. However, I quickly noticed some of the issues that others have pointed out.

What Works Well

One of the strongest points of Sage Monarch is its fast-paced progression. Yang Qi's cultivation leaps are frequent and satisfying, and the author does a good job of making you feel the power behind each breakthrough. I also appreciated that Yang Qi, while not always perfect, is generally intelligent and cautious. He plans ahead and considers the consequences of his actions, which is a refreshing change from some of the more impulsive protagonists in the genre. I also noticed that the story expands beyond simple revenge and sect squabbles, eventually delving into kingdom-building and larger-scale conflicts. The world-building gradually expands, revealing civilizations and professions that you wouldn't expect in a typical Chinese novel.

Areas of Concern

However, the novel isn't without its flaws. The rapid power-ups can sometimes feel a bit too convenient, lacking the struggle and development that some readers crave. I also felt that the side characters could be more fleshed out. While Yang Qi does form some genuine friendships, many characters seem to exist solely to serve the plot. The morality of the main character can be questionable. The fights, while vividly described, often lack strategic depth, relying more on brute force and overwhelming power.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Some readers have expressed frustration with Yang Qi's decision-making, particularly regarding his treatment of the Celestial Academy after it mistreated him. The crown prince's actions also seem to go unpunished, which can be infuriating.

Final Verdict

Overall, Sage Monarch is a mixed bag. It has moments of brilliance and excitement, but it's also weighed down by some familiar tropes and inconsistencies. If you're looking for a fast-paced, action-packed xuanhuan story with a strong protagonist, you might enjoy it. However, if you prefer more nuanced characters, intricate plots, and a slower burn, this might not be the novel for you. I'd recommend giving it a try, but be prepared for a bumpy ride.
