My Thoughts on Repaying Your Favor
"Repaying Your Favor" is a completed BL novel that I found myself surprisingly drawn into, despite my initial reservations. It's a story about a hardworking college student (MC) who falls for a seemingly cold and aloof rich heir (ML) after the ML unknowingly helps his comatose sister. The novel explores their relationship as they navigate misunderstandings, social status differences, and personal insecurities.
First Impressions
Initially, I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy this. The "cold ML" trope can be a hit or miss for me, and the early chapters definitely leaned into that. I was worried the ML would be too robotic or unlikeable. However, I decided to stick with it, and I'm glad I did.
What Works Well
One of the strongest aspects of this novel is the character development. The ML's initial coldness is explained and, eventually, softened as he confronts his own paranoia and insecurities. The MC, despite facing hardship and rejection, remains optimistic and determined, which I found really admirable. The story does a good job of showing why the MC falls for the ML, highlighting the ML's hidden kindness and the support he unknowingly provides.
I also appreciated the relatively low angst. While there are misunderstandings and moments of tension, the characters eventually communicate and work through their issues. The author also surprised me with the ML's parents, who were surprisingly accepting of their relationship, which was a refreshing change of pace. The spicy scenes are well-integrated into the story and don't feel gratuitous.
Areas of Concern
I did have some concerns about the MC's willingness to endure mistreatment in the early stages of the relationship. It made me question his self-worth and boundaries, and I wished he had shown a bit more self-respect in those moments. Also, the ML's suggestion that the MC "sell his body" was definitely inappropriate and a low point in his characterization.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, so a few reviewers mentioned some specific plot points that I want to address with a spoiler warning. The MC's sister does eventually wake up and go to college, which is a happy resolution. The ML's parents are accepting of the relationship, though the grandfather initially has a violent reaction. The ML also secretly takes revenge on those who wronged the MC.
Final Verdict
Overall, I enjoyed "Repaying Your Favor." It's a quick and engaging read with well-developed characters and a heartwarming romance. While there are some problematic elements in the beginning, the story ultimately delivers a satisfying and optimistic conclusion. If you're a fan of the "cold ML" trope done right, and you're looking for a relatively low-angst BL novel, I recommend giving this one a try.
