Who it's for, and whether it holds up.
My Thoughts on Quick Transmigration: He Likes Being a Father
This novel is definitely a mixed bag, and my feelings about it are equally complicated. "Quick Transmigration: He Likes Being a Father" throws you into a world-hopping adventure with a protagonist who's...well, let's just say he's not winning any Father of the Year awards.
First Impressions
The title is a bit misleading, I'll admit. I went in expecting a heartwarming tale of childcare, but what I found was something far more morally gray. The premise itself is intriguing: a cold, indifferent MC forced to give birth in various worlds, each with its own set of challenges and problematic love interests. It certainly grabbed my attention, but whether it held it is another story.
What Works Well
The MC, Xu Ze, is a breath of fresh air in a genre often saturated with overly sentimental protagonists. His detached demeanor and unwavering commitment to his goals, even if those goals seem selfish, make him compelling. I found myself strangely drawn to his unapologetic pragmatism. The world-building is also quite solid, with each arc presenting unique and engaging scenarios, especially as the novel progresses beyond modern settings. I also appreciated the author's willingness to explore morally ambiguous themes and challenge conventional romance tropes. It's certainly not a fluffy read, but it's undeniably thought-provoking.
Areas of Concern
However, the novel isn't without its flaws. The romantic development, or lack thereof, between the MC and the various male leads is a major point of contention. It often feels forced and unconvincing, relying on shallow tropes like jealousy and sudden infatuation. Some of the male leads are downright awful, making it difficult to root for any kind of romantic resolution. Additionally, the pacing can be uneven, with some arcs feeling rushed and others dragging on unnecessarily. And the ending, well, let's just say it's not the most satisfying conclusion.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several readers have expressed concerns about potentially triggering content, including implied non-consensual situations and abusive relationships. Be aware that the male leads are often described as "scum," and their behavior reflects that. The MC's detached attitude towards these situations may also be off-putting to some readers.
Final Verdict
"Quick Transmigration: He Likes Being a Father" is a flawed but fascinating novel. It's not a lighthearted read, and it certainly won't appeal to everyone. However, if you're looking for a morally ambiguous quick transmigration story with a unique protagonist and a willingness to explore darker themes, it might be worth checking out. Just be prepared for a bumpy ride and a potentially unsatisfying ending. I would give it a tentative 3 out of 5 stars.
