My Thoughts on Perfectly Sweet
"Perfectly Sweet" promised a fluffy, showbiz romance, and for the most part, it delivered a sweet treat. I dove in expecting lighthearted entertainment, and I wasn't disappointed. It's a fun read centered around two idols navigating their careers and burgeoning relationship.
First Impressions
The premise itself is refreshing. Instead of the usual CEO/actress or movie emperor pairings that seem to dominate the C-Entertainment genre, we get two idols, which adds a unique dynamic to their interactions and the challenges they face. I was immediately drawn to the "rising starlet meets established idol" trope.
What Works Well
The novel excels in its portrayal of a supportive and caring relationship. The male lead's gestures, like bringing back local snacks from overseas trips, are incredibly endearing and highlight his thoughtfulness. The fact that he's genuinely supportive of the female lead's dreams, even when she's unsure of her future, is a major green flag. Their romance flows smoothly, avoiding unnecessary drama or overly antagonistic characters, which makes for a relaxing reading experience. The fans within the story are rational too, which is a welcome change from the often toxic fandoms depicted in similar novels.
Areas of Concern
While the overall experience was positive, there were a few moments that made me pause. Some scenes felt like the male lead was pushing the female lead's boundaries a bit too much. I agree that the variety show scene where the male lead refused to leave the shower while the female lead was trying to wash her hair was uncomfortable, especially considering they were only at the kissing stage at that point. It felt like a violation of her personal space, masked as protectiveness. I also wished the author had delved deeper into their careers, providing more concrete examples of their projects and achievements rather than simply stating that the female lead was becoming more popular.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
There are some spoilers in the first user review, regarding the male lead's supportive stance on the female lead's future career path and his overall caring nature.
Final Verdict
Despite these minor flaws, "Perfectly Sweet" is a charming and easy read perfect for anyone looking for a fluffy romance. It's not groundbreaking, but it's a delightful escape into the world of idols and sweet, supportive relationships. If you're willing to overlook a few potentially problematic scenes, you'll find it's a satisfying and enjoyable read overall.
