My Thoughts on Ore ga Suki nano wa Imouto dakedo Imouto ja Nai

"Ore ga Suki nano wa Imouto dakedo Imouto ja Nai," or "I Love My Sister, But She's Not My Sister," is a title I approached with a healthy dose of skepticism, given the potentially… sensitive subject matter. However, I found myself surprisingly entertained, though not without some reservations.

First Impressions

My initial impression was heavily influenced by the anime adaptation, which, by all accounts, is best left forgotten. Thankfully, the source material proves to be a much more enjoyable experience. I was immediately drawn in by the self-aware humor and the surprisingly well-developed characters, particularly the titular imouto, Suzuka.

What Works Well

What stood out to me most was the character of Suzuka. She's undeniably cute and lovable, and her perspective, offered through occasional POV swaps, provides a refreshing and often hilarious contrast to the male protagonist's denseness. The story manages to navigate the potentially problematic "brother complex" territory with a surprising amount of charm and wholesomeness, avoiding the creepier pitfalls of similar series. I also appreciated the story's ability to poke fun at itself and the harem genre in general, preventing it from becoming overly tropey. I found myself genuinely invested in the characters and their relationships, even amidst the expected romantic hijinks.

Areas of Concern

While I enjoyed the overall story, I do agree with some readers who felt the latter half dragged on longer than necessary. The initial charm and witty banter seemed to wane a bit after volume six, and the plot began to feel somewhat repetitive. I also felt that certain aspects, such as the parents' absence, could have been explored further to add more depth to the narrative. Also, while the translation is generally good, some may find it overly localized, sacrificing some of the original Japanese context.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Some readers might find the ending controversial, specifically the ultimate romantic pairing. If you're sensitive to certain relationship dynamics, proceed with caution.

Final Verdict

Despite its flaws, "Ore ga Suki nano wa Imouto dakedo Imouto ja Nai" is a surprisingly enjoyable read. If you're willing to overlook some of the more questionable elements and appreciate a lighthearted, self-aware take on the harem genre, you might just find yourself pleasantly surprised. While it may not be a masterpiece, it's a fun and engaging story with a lovable cast of characters. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.

Synopsis

Nagami Suzuka is a beautiful third-year middle school student who has excellent grades and is the student council president. She wrote a novel about a little sister who dotes on her big brother, and the novel wins a light novel award. After they discuss the matter, Yuu, her big brother, is the one who debuts as a proxy light novel author instead of Suzuka under the pen name Towano Chikai (Eternal Promise).
