My Thoughts on One Sword to Immortality
"One Sword to Immortality" caught my eye with its blend of modern-day setting and xianxia elements. The premise is intriguing, and I dove in hoping for a fresh take on the genre. While the novel has its strengths, some aspects left me wanting more.
First Impressions
The initial chapters paint a picture of a seemingly ordinary, even somewhat downtrodden, teenager thrust into a world of demons and cultivation. I appreciated the modern setting, reminiscent of a "Harry Potter" meets "Rakshasa Street" vibe. The protagonist, initially portrayed as a bullied kid with a long-standing crush, felt relatable, which is crucial for drawing me into the story.
What Works Well
The story's potential lies in its unique take on the cultivation genre. Instead of a typical human cultivator, we have a demonically awakened protagonist navigating a world hidden beneath the surface of our own. The initial focus on character development, showing the MC's transformation from a timid teenager to someone grappling with newfound power, was a strong point. I also found the translation to be well-done, making the reading experience enjoyable. The action sequences, while not always groundbreaking, are engaging enough to hold my interest.
Areas of Concern
However, the novel stumbles in certain areas. The early promise of exploring the school setting and the protagonist's relationships seems to get abandoned in favor of rapid cultivation and power-ups. This abrupt shift can feel jarring and leave readers feeling somewhat misled. I also found myself struggling to connect with the side characters, who often felt underdeveloped and easily forgotten. The plot can sometimes feel vague, with cultivation laws and world-building details left unexplained, leading to confusion.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out issues with the plot development, including the MC being forced into training and sent on a potentially suicidal mission. This shift in focus, along with the apparent disappearance of previously important characters like the "demon girl" and "OP Grandma guardian," seems to detract from the initial charm of the story.
Final Verdict
"One Sword to Immortality" has a compelling premise and moments of brilliance, but it ultimately falls short of its full potential. The uneven pacing, underdeveloped side characters, and occasional plot inconsistencies prevent it from reaching the heights of other novels in the genre. While I appreciate the unique setting and initial character development, I hope the author addresses these issues to create a more cohesive and engaging story. For now, I'd rate it a solid 3 out of 5.
