My Thoughts on Nihonkoku Shoukan (LN)
First Impressions
The premise of Nihonkoku Shoukan is undeniably captivating: the entire nation of Japan is transported to a fantasy world. I was immediately intrigued by the potential for clashes of culture, technological disparity, and political maneuvering. It's a "guns vs. swords" scenario on a grand scale, and that alone earns it points for originality. The fact that the story is told primarily from the perspective of the inhabitants of the new world, rather than the Japanese themselves, is a refreshing twist on the typical isekai formula.
What Works Well
I found the world-building, particularly through the reports and dialogues of the various characters, to be quite effective. The reactions of the natives to Japan's advanced technology are amusing and believable, and the battle scenes are generally well-written. The political interactions between Japan and the other nations also hold promise, offering glimpses into complex relationships and strategic considerations. The idea that other nations might have been transported in the past, creating a layered history, is intriguing and adds depth to the world.
Areas of Concern
However, I do share some of the concerns raised by other readers. The initial reaction of the Japanese populace to being isekai'd feels somewhat muted. While I can accept that the government would work to maintain order, a complete lack of panic or emotional response seems unrealistic. The novel occasionally glosses over the logistical challenges of Japan's sudden relocation, particularly regarding energy resources. The idea that Japan can continue to function "as normal" despite relying heavily on imports strains believability. I also found the seemingly equal footing given to Japan in diplomatic negotiations, despite its overwhelming military advantage, to be somewhat questionable. A little more cunning and guile from the Japanese side would be welcomed.
Final Verdict
Nihonkoku Shoukan has a fantastic premise and offers moments of genuine excitement and intrigue. While the novel has some shortcomings in terms of believability and character depth, its unique perspective and focus on political and military strategy make it a worthwhile read for fans of the isekai genre. It will be interesting to see if the author addresses some of these issues as the story progresses.
