My Thoughts on My House of Horrors
"My House of Horrors" is a wild ride, a blend of genres that somehow manages to be both terrifying and hilarious. It's a novel that grabbed me from the start with its unique premise and kept me hooked, even when it stumbled a bit along the way.
First Impressions
The initial concept is undeniably genius: a young man inherits a haunted house attraction and a mysterious phone, leading him into a supernatural world. I was immediately drawn in by the protagonist, Chen Ge, a plucky and resourceful guy who has to navigate increasingly dangerous situations with nothing but his wits and a healthy dose of bravado. It's a refreshing take on the typical system-leveling story, injecting a modern horror theme that feels both fresh and familiar.
What Works Well
The author excels at creating a truly immersive atmosphere. The descriptions are vivid, painting a picture of truly terrifying environments. I could almost feel the cold breath of vengeful spirits and hear the whispers in the dark. Beyond the scares, the characters are surprisingly well-developed. Even minor characters have their own backstories and motivations, making the world feel rich and alive. The humor is also a major strength, providing welcome relief from the constant tension. Chen Ge himself is a fantastic character – equal parts cunning, brave, and utterly insane. Watching him outsmart ghosts and psychos with his quick thinking and absurd antics is endlessly entertaining. The mysteries surrounding his missing parents and the secrets of the haunted house add layers of intrigue that kept me invested throughout the story.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the novel immensely, I did notice some recurring criticisms. Several readers mentioned that the story becomes somewhat repetitive after a certain point, falling into a predictable pattern of haunted house expansion, police cases, and comedic customer interactions. Some also felt that the horror elements were toned down later on, shifting the focus more towards action and, at times, even comedy. The ending felt rushed, leaving some plot threads unresolved. The MC loses his initial charm when he becomes overpowered and the horror elements are traded for action.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some of the later arcs, particularly the "School of the Afterlife" arc, were criticized for being bloated and less engaging, with an overemphasis on tragic backstories and philosophical musings. There is also a significant change of the MC's character, as he goes from an ordinary person to a monster-like existence.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "My House of Horrors" is a highly enjoyable read, especially if you're a fan of horror, mystery, and dark humor. The unique premise, well-developed characters, and immersive atmosphere make it stand out from the crowd. While the story may lose some of its initial spark in the later chapters, the journey is still well worth taking. I'd recommend giving it a try, but be aware that the scares might fade as the action ramps up.
