My Thoughts on Mother of a Villainess
"Mother of a Villainess" is a completed web novel that I recently took a dive into, and I have mixed feelings about it. It has some compelling elements, but ultimately, it didn't quite live up to its potential for me. The premise—a reincarnation into the mother of a villainess, well before the otome game even starts—is intriguing, but the execution felt somewhat lacking.
First Impressions
I was initially drawn in by the unique twist on the isekai genre. The idea of shaping the future villainess's life from childhood was promising. I was ready for a story about navigating the complexities of raising a child in a world steeped in otome game tropes, but the initial excitement waned as the story progressed.
What Works Well
The early interactions between the MC and the male lead are genuinely sweet, and the translation is well-done, making it an easy read. I also appreciated the extras that provided different character perspectives. These added depth to the world and gave me a broader understanding of the events unfolding. The story is a quick and easy read if you are bored and need something to pass the time.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue lies with the plot's direction and the character of the male lead. The pacing felt off at times, with abrupt transitions and unresolved plot points. The setup of the ML being a "cheating husband" in the original timeline hangs over the story, creating a sense of unease. There is also the rushed ending with the main character and the male lead getting together. It would have been nice to see more development between the two characters.

Many readers expressed disappointment with the plot as well, especially regarding the male lead's backstory and the way the original timeline impacts the current one. The male lead had a "What If" dream that reflected his fate in the original storyline. In the original timeline, the husband had a second family and illegitimate daughter.

"Mother of a Villainess" has moments of charm and a unique premise, but it ultimately falls short due to pacing issues, and the handling of the male lead's character. It's not a terrible read, but it's also not one I would highly recommend. I'd give it a 3 out of 5 stars. If you're looking for a light, fluffy isekai with minimal drama, this might be worth a try, but be prepared for a somewhat unsatisfying resolution.
