My Thoughts on Marry the Younger Uncle of the Former Prince Consort
"Marry the Younger Uncle of the Former Prince Consort" is a completed historical romance that I recently dove into, and while it wasn't a perfect read, it definitely had its charms. Set in ancient China, the story focuses on an arranged marriage, family conflicts, and the blossoming romance between the leads. Overall, I found it to be a pleasant, if not groundbreaking, experience.
First Impressions
Initially, I wasn't completely sold on the female lead, Jianshan. She came across as somewhat cold and distant, making it difficult to connect with her. However, as the story progressed and I learned more about her past motivations, I began to understand and even appreciate her character arc. The male lead, Zhan Yan, on the other hand, was a breath of fresh air. It's rare to find such an honest and genuinely kind male lead in these types of novels; he definitely won me over.
What Works Well
The romance is undoubtedly a strong point. Zhan Yan's devotion to Jianshan is heartwarming, and their relationship development is a highlight of the story. I also really enjoyed the brotherly relationship between Jianshan and Zhao Youze. His intelligence and gentle nature added a welcome dynamic to the narrative. The emperor, surprisingly, was another standout character. He's portrayed as a kind and paternal figure, which is a refreshing change from the often ruthless emperors we see in similar novels. The author did a great job of giving him layers and complexity.
Areas of Concern
While the romance takes center stage, the political plots felt somewhat secondary and didn't fully capture my attention. The pacing was decent, but at times, there were mundane details that didn't add much to the overall story. My main criticism is similar to what I often find in Chinese novels: the lack of depth and development in secondary characters, particularly the female ones. They often fall into the trap of being envious and jealous, with few given the opportunity to evolve or find happiness outside of romantic relationships. This felt a bit repetitive and could have been handled with more nuance.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Marry the Younger Uncle of the Former Prince Consort" is an enjoyable read, particularly if you're a fan of historical romance with a focus on devoted love interests. While some aspects could be improved, the strong characterization of the male lead and the heartwarming central romance make it worth checking out. I'd give it a solid 3.75 out of 5 stars.
