My Thoughts on Lord of Glory
"Lord of Glory" plunges you into the dark ambition of a mortal striving for power, and it’s a wild ride. I found myself intrigued by the premise of a protagonist willing to sacrifice his humanity for strength. This novel definitely isn't for the faint of heart, but if you enjoy morally gray characters and dark fantasy, it might just scratch that itch.
First Impressions
Initially, I was a bit hesitant. The early chapters seemed to portray the main character (MC) as somewhat clumsy and naive, especially considering his aspirations. However, I stuck with it, and I'm glad I did. The initial "sloppiness" does seem to be intentional, showcasing his initial inexperience before a satisfying character evolution takes place.
What Works Well
The character development is a major draw. Watching the MC evolve from a powerless servant to a being of immense power, shedding his human traits along the way, is fascinating. The author doesn't shy away from depicting the MC's cruelty and growing God complex, which I appreciated. It's a bold move to write a truly evil protagonist, and when done well, it can be incredibly compelling. The story explores the cost of power, and the loss of humanity, in a very tangible way. I also appreciate the focus on the MC's journey towards immortality, highlighting the idea that power without longevity is ultimately fleeting.
Areas of Concern
While the MC's development is a strength, the journey isn't without its stumbles. Some readers might find the MC's early impulsiveness and occasional lapses in judgment frustrating. This can lead to situations where he finds himself in constant life-or-death scenarios, which may feel contrived to some. Also, not everyone will appreciate the lack of satisfying revenge plots or the focus on the price the MC pays for his power. This can make the story feel frustrating at times.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers mentioned that there are arcs in the story where the MC is constantly tortured.
Final Verdict
"Lord of Glory" is a unique and compelling dark fantasy novel with a truly evil protagonist. While it has its flaws, particularly in the early stages and in some pacing issues, the overall journey of the MC's transformation is worth experiencing, especially if you're a fan of morally ambiguous characters and dark themes. Just be prepared for a protagonist who isn't afraid to get his hands dirty and make morally questionable choices.
