My Thoughts on Little Ger, Slow Life in Another World
Little Ger, Slow Life in Another World promised a relaxing journey into a rural setting, and for the most part, it delivered. This novel follows Miao He, a transmigrator who finds himself in the body of a ger (a person capable of giving birth) in an ancient world. He marries Yang DaLang, a kind and devoted hunter, and together they embark on a farming adventure, aided by Miao He's special "living soil" which accelerates plant growth. It's a classic "poor to rich" story, but with a focus on the simple joys of life.
First Impressions
I was immediately drawn in by the promise of a low-stakes, slice-of-life story. The initial chapters were particularly enjoyable, setting the stage for a heartwarming tale of love and rural development. The idea of a protagonist using modern knowledge to improve farming techniques in an ancient setting is always appealing, and this novel seemed to embrace that wholeheartedly.
What Works Well
The core strength of this novel lies in its relaxing atmosphere and the sweet relationship between Miao He and Yang DaLang. Many readers, including myself, found their interactions to be incredibly cute and their devotion to each other heartwarming. I appreciated the lack of unnecessary drama and misunderstandings between the main couple. The focus on farming, a genre I personally enjoy, was also a major plus. It was refreshing to see a story that didn't abandon its rural roots in favor of political intrigue or city life. The food descriptions were also a highlight, making me crave the dishes Miao He created. The side characters, though sometimes frustrating, felt like real people with their own motivations and flaws, adding depth to the story's world.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall experience, there were a few aspects that held it back from being a perfect read. The pacing could be uneven, with the author sometimes jumping between topics without fully resolving them. Some found the ending to be abrupt and wished for more closure on certain plot threads. The role of the other transmigrator felt somewhat underdeveloped and his downfall was a little too simplistic. I also noticed that some readers were confused with the translation and editing.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers expressed reservations about the portrayal of the "villain" character who was shamed for his gay feelings, finding it potentially homophobic. The fanwai was also considered by some as poorly written.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, Little Ger, Slow Life in Another World is a charming and relaxing read that I would recommend to anyone looking for a lighthearted farming story with a sweet romance. It's not a perfect novel, but its strengths outweigh its weaknesses, making it a worthwhile escape into a simpler, more idyllic world.
