My Thoughts on Jiaochen
"Jiaochen" is a completed slice-of-life romance that I dove into with high expectations, given its solid 4.4/5 rating. The tags like "charming protagonist," "doting love interests," and "early romance" definitely piqued my interest. Overall, I found it to be a sweet and heartwarming story, though it wasn't without its minor flaws.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise of a confident designer, Ji Qingying, boldly pursuing a seemingly cold doctor, Fu Yanzhi. The slow-burn romance was a refreshing change of pace, allowing me to appreciate the gradual development of their relationship. I loved that the characters were mature and communicative, resolving misunderstandings quickly and logically.
What Works Well
The strength of "Jiaochen" lies in its characters and their interactions. I found Ji Qingying to be a particularly likable female lead – elegant, witty, and devoted to her dreams. Fu Yanzhi, with his initial aloofness and eventual doting affection, was definitely swoon-worthy. I also appreciated how the author wove Ji Qingying's career as a cheongsam designer into the story, adding depth and meaning to her character. Many readers have also praised the moderate amount of spice, and the balance between drama and fluff. The family and friend relationships also shone, adding another layer of warmth.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, I can see why some readers found the pacing to be a bit off. The slow burn, while initially appealing, occasionally felt too slow, especially towards the end. Some readers found the latter part of the novel, particularly after the climax, to be somewhat long-winded and repetitive. I also noticed that a few readers were disappointed with the female lead's character development, feeling that she relied too much on others to solve her problems.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have mentioned that Fu Yanzhi initially allows Ji Qingying to chase him for a specific reason, which is later revealed. There's also a plotline involving design plagiarism in Ji Qingying's past. The ending apparently includes extra chapters with fluff, smut, and side stories for other characters.
Final Verdict
Despite some minor pacing issues and potential character development concerns, I found "Jiaochen" to be a worthwhile read. It's a sweet and heartwarming romance with charming characters, a delightful slow burn, and a satisfying conclusion. If you're looking for a lighthearted and engaging story with a focus on love, dreams, and personal growth, I'd recommend giving "Jiaochen" a try.
