My Thoughts on Isekai Souzou no Susume ~Smartphone App de Wakusei wo Tsukkushiteshimatta Ore wa Kami Tonari Sekai wo Meguru~
First Impressions
Okay, let's dive into "Isekai Souzou no Susume" (which, let's be honest, I'm just going to call "Smartphone Isekai" for brevity). The premise, a guy creating a world with a smartphone app and then bopping between that world and the real one, definitely grabbed my attention. It's a fresh spin on the isekai formula, and the idea of a "god" juggling real-world responsibilities with his created world is inherently interesting. I was hoping for something unique.
What Works Well
I can see why some readers are sticking with it. The initial world-building is compelling. The concept of a creator god learning the ropes is entertaining. Some appreciate the powers and abilities showcased, finding the differences between the "original" and "other" worlds intriguing. Others have really enjoyed the premise of the story and that is something that I can agree with. The interaction between the real world and the created world is also a plus.
Areas of Concern
However, and this is a big "however," the execution seems to be where things fall apart for many, including myself. The main character… well, let's just say he's divisive. A lot of readers have expressed frustration with his personality, describing him as weak-willed and easily pushed around. The passivity can be grating, especially when he's supposed to be a god-like figure. It feels like he lacks agency, just getting dragged along by events and side characters, which is a major turnoff.
The side characters, particularly the female ones, also receive some criticism. Some find them annoying and overly demanding, immediately treating the MC like a servant. This dynamic, coupled with the MC's lack of backbone, creates a frustrating reading experience for many. The translation is also questionable for some.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several reviewers mention a specific instance where the MC heals a noble's son, but the noble's daughter takes credit and essentially claims the MC as her servant. This seems to be a breaking point for many, highlighting the issues of the MC's treatment and the questionable writing surrounding it.
Final Verdict
"Smartphone Isekai" presents an interesting concept, but the execution leaves much to be desired. The weak-willed MC and annoying side characters detract from the overall experience. If you're really into the "god creating a world" trope and can tolerate a passive protagonist, maybe give it a shot. Otherwise, there are probably better isekai options out there. For me, the frustration outweighs the initial promise.
