My Thoughts on I’m 8 Million Poor
"I’m 8 Million Poor" is a web novel that I dove into with a mix of curiosity and caution, given the somewhat polarized opinions surrounding it. It's a story about a woman who transmigrates into a novel she only skimmed, suddenly finding herself with a villa and eight million yuan. What follows is her attempt to navigate this new life, determined to live happily and avoid the original novel's plot.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise. A female lead waking up with a fortune and deciding to open a snack shop instead of chasing fame? That's the kind of refreshing subversion I can get behind. The early chapters promised a light, fluffy read with a comedic edge, and I was eager to see where it would go.
What Works Well
One of the strongest aspects of this novel, for me, was the main character, Jiang Baiwan. She's portrayed as a practical, optimistic, and independent woman who isn't easily swayed by the typical tropes. I appreciated that she had her own goals and wasn't solely defined by her relationship with the male lead. Her friendship with Tan Mi also stood out as a genuine and enjoyable part of the story. I also enjoyed that the FL wasn't a Mary Sue and made mistakes along the way, such as when she started her Malatang shop and had to hire a cook because her cooking wasn't great.
Areas of Concern
However, I can also see why some readers found the story lacking. The plot can feel a bit simple, and the pacing isn't always consistent. Some found the male lead, Ji Chen, to be a bit bland or even off-putting, especially in his initial interactions with Jiang Baiwan. Some readers found the "money obsessed" MC to be annoying and that the title drop was an unsuccessful joke. The constant focus on money can get repetitive.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers found the original protagonists of the novel to be pathetic and ridiculous. The original female lead, in particular, was criticized for being overly dramatic and constantly crying.
Final Verdict
Overall, "I’m 8 Million Poor" is a light and fluffy read that's best enjoyed if you're not looking for deep character development or a complex plot. It's a fun, easygoing story with a likable female lead, but it does have its flaws. If you're in the mood for a comedic romance with minimal drama and a focus on enjoying life's simple pleasures, this might be worth checking out. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
