My Thoughts on Illusions, Lies, Truth

"Illusions, Lies, Truth" throws you headfirst into a world where the mundane clashes spectacularly with the supernatural, and I'm finding myself thoroughly entertained. The story follows Jiang Ziya, a seemingly ordinary guy whose "Truth-seeing eye" allows him to perceive things others can't – ghosts, illusions, and a whole lot of weirdness. What starts as a simple life with his family quickly spirals into a complex web of mysteries, and I'm loving the ride.

First Impressions

The initial chapters immediately hooked me with their blend of slice-of-life normalcy and unsettling supernatural occurrences. Jiang Ziya's attempts to ignore the bizarre things he sees, like the doll-like second daughter only visible through his left eye, create a constant sense of unease and intrigue. The author does a fantastic job of making you question what's real and what's not, mirroring Jiang Ziya's own confusion and making me feel like I'm solving a puzzle right alongside him.

What Works Well

The characters are a major highlight. They're quirky, flawed, and feel incredibly real. Jiang Ziya, in particular, is a compelling protagonist. His struggles to reconcile his normal life with the increasingly bizarre things he's witnessing are relatable and engaging. The mystery surrounding the supernatural elements is also well-crafted, with each chapter revealing just enough to keep you guessing and eager to learn more. The comedic interactions between characters provide a welcome balance to the suspenseful plot, making for a truly enjoyable reading experience. I also found the author's self-insertion, along with characters from their other novels, to be a unique and fun addition, adding a meta layer to the narrative.

Areas of Concern

While the story primarily intends to be horror, the novel sometimes dips into other genres, and I feel that may not be to everyone's tastes.

Final Verdict

Overall, "Illusions, Lies, Truth" is a captivating blend of mystery, comedy, and supernatural elements. If you enjoy stories about seemingly ordinary people uncovering hidden worlds and appreciate well-developed characters with a touch of the bizarre, this novel is definitely worth checking out. I'm eagerly anticipating future updates to see where the author takes this intriguing story next.
