My Thoughts on I Only Want You
"I Only Want You" promised a heartwarming slice-of-life romance, and for the most part, it delivered. I found myself easily drawn into the lives of Yan Lan and Xie Yun Zhi, and the presence of little TianTian definitely added an extra layer of sweetness to the story.
First Impressions
The initial setup is quite charming: a devoted admirer finally getting a chance with the object of his affection. What immediately grabbed my attention was the emphasis on mature communication, something that's often missing in romance novels. I was eager to see how the author would navigate the complexities of their relationship.
What Works Well
The strength of this novel lies in its characters and the realistic portrayal of their interactions. The main couple's ability to address issues openly resonated with me, and I appreciated that they weren't afraid to be vulnerable with each other. TianTian is an absolute scene-stealer, injecting warmth and humor into the narrative. I also found Yan Lan's best friend, Yang Xiao Le, to be a standout character, offering insightful advice and adding depth to the story. The side couple was also nice, and I enjoyed seeing their relationship develop alongside the main one. It's worth noting that the absence of overly dramatic villains or contrived conflicts allowed the story to unfold naturally, creating a more immersive experience.
Areas of Concern
Despite my overall enjoyment, there were a few aspects that left me wanting more. I felt that the main characters, particularly Xie Yun Zhi, could have benefited from more in-depth exploration of their backgrounds and motivations. I also wondered about some of the plot devices, like the use of TianTian to push the plot forward and then his relative disappearance later on. While the communication between the main couple was generally positive, I sometimes found their methods of conflict resolution to be a bit immature, relying on mind games instead of direct communication.
