My Thoughts on I Married the Famous, Hideous “Young Lady Goblin” and She Was Absolutely Adorable.
This web novel certainly had me hooked with its intriguing title and premise. The story revolves around an arranged marriage between a "hideous" young lady and a seemingly ordinary nobleman, and the initial chapters are undeniably charming. However, the journey wasn't without its bumps, and I came away with mixed feelings.
First Impressions
I was immediately drawn in by the cuteness and wholesomeness of the relationship between the two leads. The dual perspective, shifting between the male and female leads, gave me a deeper understanding of their feelings and motivations. It felt like I was reading two different genres at once – a lighthearted rom-com from the male lead's perspective, and a sweet shoujo story from the female lead's.
What Works Well
The early romance is definitely the strongest aspect of this novel. The characters are endearing, and their interactions are genuinely sweet. I appreciated the author's attention to detail in portraying their growing affection for each other. The male lead's desire to see past the female lead's appearance and connect with her on a deeper level was particularly heartwarming. Many readers praised the initial world-building and the male lead's wisdom, which seemed appropriate for someone with an older soul.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the plot takes a nosedive around the halfway point. The introduction of a contrived and unnecessary conflict soured my enjoyment. The male lead makes a series of questionable decisions, seemingly abandoning his love interest for what he perceives as her own good. This abrupt shift in character felt jarring and inconsistent with his earlier behavior. The drama felt forced and out of place, disrupting the previously established tone of the story. I found myself losing respect for the male lead's choices and the overall narrative direction.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several readers have pointed out a major plot point that involves the male lead breaking off the engagement in a public and humiliating way, even faking infidelity, so the female lead can potentially marry a prince. This decision is driven by a misguided sense of self-sacrifice and a belief that she deserves a "better" life. This action is seen as a betrayal of her feelings and a complete disregard for her autonomy.
Final Verdict
"I Married the Famous, Hideous “Young Lady Goblin” and She Was Absolutely Adorable" starts as an adorable and heartwarming romance, but ultimately stumbles due to a poorly executed plot twist and inconsistent character development. While the initial chapters are enjoyable, the second half of the novel may leave you feeling frustrated and disappointed. Proceed with caution, and be prepared for a significant drop in quality after the first act.
