My Thoughts on I [Imperial] Am Not This Kind of Man
"I [Imperial] Am Not This Kind of Man" has been quite the ride! With a blend of action, adventure, drama, and a dash of gender-bending, it's a novel that keeps you on your toes. After diving in, I can definitely see why it has such a loyal following.
First Impressions
Initially, the gender bender aspect intrigued me. The premise of a female MC transmigrating into a male prince in ancient China immediately grabbed my attention. I was curious to see how the author would handle the complexities of navigating a patriarchal society from a different perspective.
What Works Well
The political intrigue is definitely a highlight. The story is less romance-focused and more about the intricate strategies and power plays within the imperial court. I found myself engrossed in the MC's journey from a powerless prince to a key player in the game. The characters are complex and well-rounded, with their own motivations and backstories. It's refreshing to see that even the antagonists aren't just cardboard villains but have understandable reasons for their actions.
I also appreciate the MC's character. They aren't just a Mary Sue who instantly masters everything. The MC is clever but not unrealistically so, using knowledge from their past life to navigate the challenges of the new world. The MC actually thinks about things like taxes, social reforms, even math, so I really looked forward to the changes the MC brings forward.
Areas of Concern
Some readers found the pacing to be slow, especially in the first half of the book, with the MC seemingly going from one disaster to another. Also, the female-to-male transmigration aspect seems to fade into the background, which might disappoint some readers looking for a deeper exploration of gender identity.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some reviewers mentioned a twist involving the MC cross-dressing as their sister, which becomes an important plot device. There's also some discussion about BL subtext, though the main romance is heterosexual. One reviewer highlighted the bodyguard's storyline and wished it had been explored as a BL relationship. The ending of the Beishuo storyline, with the volcano arc, seemed very side-questy compared to the rest of the novel.
Final Verdict
Overall, "I [Imperial] Am Not This Kind of Man" is a compelling read with a strong focus on political intrigue, well-developed characters, and a satisfying conclusion. While the pacing might be slow at times and the gender bender aspect isn't heavily emphasized, the intricate plot and engaging characters make it worth the read.
