My Thoughts on I Became Hugely Popular After Becoming a Cannon Fodder Star
This novel had me hooked from the start with its promise of an experienced actor navigating the treacherous waters of the entertainment industry after transmigrating into a cannon fodder character. It's a classic wish-fulfillment setup, and for the most part, it delivers on that premise.
First Impressions
I was immediately drawn to the main character, Ji Li. He's a film emperor reborn, and it's fun to see him use his past life's experience to make smart decisions and choose fulfilling roles. The initial plot, where he uses a "beggar" role to launch his career, is a great example of this. I also appreciated that the original protagonist of the novel he transmigrated into wasn't a jerk, but instead became a friend and admirer.
What Works Well
The author's strength lies in creating detailed movie plots within the story. I found myself more invested in some of these fictional films than the main narrative! The side characters are also a highlight. Ji Li's agent is a fantastic "mom fan" figure, and the friendships he forms feel genuine. I also liked that the romance was a slow burn, with the male lead, Qin Li, subtly creating opportunities to be closer to Ji Li.
Areas of Concern
I did find myself agreeing with some of the criticisms leveled against the second half of the novel. The male lead's possessiveness becomes a bit much, and Ji Li sometimes seems to lose his edge, becoming overly reliant on Qin Li. The constant face-slapping of antagonists also gets repetitive. It would have been nice to see Ji Li face more genuine challenges and experience some setbacks along the way. I also felt the author was a little too in love with the MC, constantly reminding us how beautiful he is and how easily he succeeds.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out that the male lead's actions after they get together can be interpreted as controlling, even setting up a gay movie for them to star in together without properly consulting Ji Li. This possessiveness extends to becoming jealous of Ji Li's friendships and manipulating situations to keep them close. I can see how this dynamic could be off-putting for some readers.
Final Verdict
Overall, "I Became Hugely Popular After Becoming a Cannon Fodder Star" is a decent read, especially if you're a fan of entertainment industry stories and don't mind a bit of cliché. While it has its flaws, particularly in the second half, the engaging characters and well-developed movie plots make it an enjoyable, if not groundbreaking, experience. I'd recommend it as a light, easy read when you're in the mood for something fluffy and entertaining.
