My Thoughts on I! Accept Disciples and Become Stronger!
I went into "I! Accept Disciples and Become Stronger!" with hopes for a fun, lighthearted cultivation story, but I came away feeling rather… conflicted. The premise, an OP protagonist gaining power through his disciples, definitely had potential. However, the execution left something to be desired.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the idea of a Nascent Soul expert taking on disciples. The early chapters introduced a system that rewards the protagonist for nurturing talent, which sounded like a recipe for a satisfying power fantasy. But quickly, I noticed a pattern emerging.
What Works Well
It's hard to ignore that some readers genuinely enjoyed the overpowered nature of the main character. If you're looking for a novel where the protagonist effortlessly crushes his enemies, this might scratch that itch. Some appreciate the consistent personality of the MC and find the face-slapping entertaining. The lack of romance is also a bonus for some readers who are tired of the same tropes.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, my enjoyment waned as the story progressed. The biggest issue, I found, was the repetitive emphasis on the MC's cultivation level. It felt like every other paragraph reminded me that he was a Nascent Soul expert, which quickly became tiresome. The world-building also felt shallow, with power rankings and descriptions often serving only to highlight the MC's strength.
The protagonist's personality also proved to be a sticking point for me. His ruthless actions and seemingly random acts of violence felt jarring, especially considering his supposed Earthly origins. It was difficult to connect with a character who seemed to lack basic compassion. Furthermore, the disciples themselves felt underdeveloped, serving more as stat boosters than fully realized characters. This made it hard to invest in their journeys or feel any real stakes in their development.
Final Verdict
"I! Accept Disciples and Become Stronger!" has a core concept that could have been great, but ultimately falls short due to repetitive writing, shallow world-building, and an unlikeable protagonist. While some may enjoy the wish-fulfillment aspect of an overpowered main character, I found the overall experience to be lacking in depth and nuance. It's a novel that I wanted to like, but ultimately couldn't.
