My Thoughts on Higawari Teni ~ Ore wa Arayuru Sekai de Musou Suru ~
This web novel, with its ridiculously long title, definitely piqued my interest. The premise of a protagonist hopping between worlds, accumulating powers and skills along the way, is inherently appealing. It promises a fast-paced adventure with plenty of variety, and from what I've read so far, it mostly delivers.
First Impressions
My initial reaction was positive. The idea of a veteran hero constantly being summoned to different worlds is a fun twist on the isekai trope. The early chapters do a good job of introducing the main character and establishing his somewhat jaded and arrogant personality. He's not your typical goody-two-shoes protagonist, and that's a refreshing change.
What Works Well
The world-hopping aspect is definitely the strongest point. Each arc feels relatively short and focused, preventing the story from getting bogged down in unnecessary filler. The protagonist's overpowered nature, while potentially off-putting to some, is justified by his backstory and the sheer number of demon lords he's supposedly defeated. I also appreciate the potential for satirical commentary on the isekai genre itself. The concept of a hero being tossed around to solve everyone else's problems has some serious comedic potential.
Areas of Concern
While the core concept is strong, there are a few aspects that give me pause. The harem element seems to be a point of contention for many, with some finding the protagonist's treatment of his wives problematic and even bordering on abusive. The idea of essentially "collecting" female characters and storing them away until needed doesn't sit well with me either. This harem concept seems to be just a simple "collecting" game rather than a character building exercise.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some reviews mention plot points that I would consider spoilers, so proceed with caution. Specifically, there are concerns about the harem becoming a mindless collection of characters with little relevance to the overall plot, and the protagonist's attitude towards them.
Final Verdict
"Higawari Teni" is a novel with a lot of potential, but its execution is somewhat flawed. The core concept of a world-hopping hero is engaging, and the fast-paced nature of the story keeps things interesting. However, the problematic harem elements and the protagonist's potentially unlikeable behavior are significant drawbacks. If you're willing to overlook these issues, you might find this to be an enjoyable, albeit flawed, read.
