My Thoughts on Gourd Farm

"Gourd Farm" promised a simple, farming-focused story, and for the most part, it delivered. It's not a novel aiming to be the next epic, but rather a cozy slice-of-life tale about a man returning to his rural roots. Overall, I found it enjoyable, though with a few caveats.

First Impressions

The premise is straightforward: our protagonist, after losing his city job, discovers a magical gourd that blesses his crops with incredible growth and flavor. This immediately sets the stage for a "poor-to-rich" narrative centered around agriculture. I was intrigued by the idea of a story that stays grounded in farming, without resorting to overly complex plotlines or overpowered abilities.

What Works Well

The best part of "Gourd Farm" is its dedication to the farming aspect. The daily grind, the challenges, and the small victories of rural life are all vividly portrayed. The protagonist is also a breath of fresh air. He's hardworking, sensible, and, importantly, not arrogant. He faces believable conflicts within his village and handles them with a blend of forgiveness and firmness. I appreciated that he wasn't a pushover, standing up for himself and others when necessary. The slow-burn progression of his farming enterprise felt realistic, and I was invested in his journey. The setting, a modern Chinese village, adds a unique flavor to the story.

Areas of Concern

While the farming aspects shine, the story isn't without its flaws. The protagonist's seemingly nonchalant acceptance of the magical gourd felt a bit odd. A little more curiosity or wonder about its origins would have added depth. Also, the female lead's portrayal as somewhat weak and submissive was disappointing. I would have preferred a more dynamic and engaging character.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Some readers might find the ending anticlimactic. The resolution of the market price conflict felt rushed and lacked suspense. The three-month time skip to the protagonist meeting his in-laws felt like a convenient shortcut.

Final Verdict

"Gourd Farm" is a solid choice if you're looking for a relaxing, farming-centric story. It's not a groundbreaking novel, but it's a well-executed example of the slice-of-life genre with a touch of the supernatural. If you enjoy slow-paced narratives, realistic characters, and a focus on the simple pleasures of farming, you'll likely find this book a worthwhile read. Just don't expect too much complexity or high-stakes drama. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Synopsis

In the bustling urban center, Yang Feng couldn’t make ends meet washing dishes, so he reluctantly returned to his hometown. However, he never expected that he would discover a gourd on his way back that could grow top-quality crops. Starting with selling strawberries at a roadside stall, Yang Feng gradually made his way to the pinnacle of success. The fruits and vegetables he grew were all top-notch ingredients, sought after by five-star restaurants. “I want 500 pounds of tomatoes!” a group of guys in Mercedes-Benz cars shouted, waving wads of cash. “Why don’t you go steal them yourself!” another person yelled. “Who the hell stepped on my foot?!” They all surrounded Yang Feng’s vegetable garden, hoping to get their hands on his produce. Riding his cargo tricycle, Yang Feng arrived and said, “What are you all doing? Line up and take turns. Today, each person is limited to purchasing only 30 pounds of tomatoes.”
