My Thoughts on Gekkou

"Gekkou," with its intriguing title and promise of mystery, definitely piqued my interest. Diving in, I found a novel that seems to have strongly divided its readership, eliciting both fervent praise and sharp criticism. My own experience landed somewhere in the middle, appreciating some aspects while feeling underwhelmed by others.

First Impressions

The initial setup is classic light novel fare: a cynical protagonist, a beautiful and mysterious female lead, and a series of strange events that quickly pull you into the narrative. I was immediately drawn in by the mystery surrounding the female lead and the protagonist's jaded perspective, which offered a fresh lens through which to view the unfolding events.

What Works Well

Many readers praised the novel's engaging plot and surprising twists, and I agree that "Gekkou" does a good job of keeping you guessing. The flow of the story is smooth, and I found myself engrossed in trying to unravel the truth behind the mysteries. The interactions between the main characters, particularly the tension and subtle romance, were also a highlight. Several readers also mentioned that the novel's short length was a strength, allowing for a concise and satisfying story.

Areas of Concern

However, I also found myself agreeing with some of the criticisms leveled against "Gekkou." Some felt the mystery was naive or predictable, and I have to admit that some of the revelations felt a bit too dramatic and theatrical. The characters, while interesting, sometimes felt unrealistic, and their motivations weren't always entirely believable. I also noticed that some readers were disappointed with the romance aspect, finding it underdeveloped or unfulfilling.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Some reviews contain spoilers about the plot and character motivations. If you haven't read the novel yet, proceed with caution.

Final Verdict

Overall, "Gekkou" is an enjoyable read with a compelling mystery and engaging characters. While it has its flaws, particularly in the believability of some plot points and character actions, the novel's strengths outweigh its weaknesses. If you're looking for a short, surprising mystery with a touch of romance, "Gekkou" is worth checking out. However, if you prefer more realistic characters and a more nuanced mystery, you might find yourself disappointed. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Synopsis

Gekkou, or “Moonlight”, is about the peculiar relationship between a cynical boy and a perfect girl. Said cynical boy is Nonomiya who spends day in day out in boredom, taking refuge from his dull life in his imagination. One fateful day, he happens upon the notebook of the much-rumored beauty Youko Tsukimori, neglected on the ground. Poking out from it is a scrap of paper with the unexpected title “mu*der Recipe”. His interest ignited, he immediately stuffs it into his pocket, only to find out the promising recipe contains nothing but scenarios that may or may not lead to deadly accidents, not even worthy of being called a plan. When he tentatively asks her about it the next day, she hasn’t lost anything. But then her father dies. An accident…
