My Thoughts on Fortunate Wife
"Fortunate Wife" is a web novel I dove into with a mix of excitement and trepidation, given its reverse harem and slice-of-life elements. The premise, a modern woman finding herself married to five brothers in ancient China, certainly piqued my interest. While the overall rating is decent, the wide range of opinions had me curious to form my own.
First Impressions
I have to admit, the initial chapters are a slog. It's a slow burn that borders on glacial. The story spends so much time on mundane details that I almost gave up early on. I can see why some readers were frustrated with the pacing. It felt like I was waiting for the story to actually start.
What Works Well
Once I pushed past the initial hurdle, the story started to grow on me. The strength of "Fortunate Wife" lies in its characters, particularly the brothers. The author did a great job of making each one distinct, with unique personalities and their own relationships with each other. They aren't just generic love interests. I found myself genuinely invested in their individual stories and how they interacted as a family.
The "fortunate" aspect of the title also goes both ways. Li Man isn't just lucky to be with them; she brings positive change to their lives. It's satisfying to see her gradually improve their circumstances and help them become their best selves. The novel shines in its portrayal of domestic bliss and the small, sweet moments of everyday life.
Areas of Concern
The slow pacing remains a consistent issue throughout the story. I also found Li Man's character a bit inconsistent. At times, she's portrayed as a modern woman, but at other times, she acts naive and clueless. It made it difficult to fully connect with her, and I often found myself more interested in the brothers.

Some readers have pointed out that Li Man's true identity is Shanguang Yu, related to the royal family and the Crown Prince's fiancée. Also, one of the Li brothers' aunts is introduced and she seems to hate Li Man for no reason. But, there's a twist. The Li brothers' mother was this beautiful woman that was very spoiled by her husbands and shortly after giving birth to Little Five, she s*upidly threw a tantrum and ran off into cold weather because she was unhappy over something. Her husbands chased after her, and the parents all end up dying in the snow and leaving their children orphans.
Final Verdict
"Fortunate Wife" is a mixed bag. If you're looking for a fast-paced, action-packed novel, this isn't it. However, if you appreciate slice-of-life stories with well-developed characters and don't mind a slow burn, you might find something to enjoy here. Just be prepared to push through the initial chapters and be patient with the pacing.
