My Thoughts on Death Notice
"Death Notice" definitely grabbed my attention with its edgy premise: a protagonist with a split personality, one side being a serial killer, thrown into a multi-world survival game. The synopsis promised a dark and twisted ride, and while my experience wasn't exactly what I anticipated, it was still a journey with some compelling aspects.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked. The concept is undeniably unique, a breath of fresh air in a genre often saturated with similar tropes. I was eager to see how the author would handle a protagonist with such a dark duality, how the "serial killer" persona would manifest, and what kind of "art" he would create. However, I quickly realized that the initial chapters are heavy on world-building, with extensive descriptions that, while detailed, felt somewhat disconnected from the main plot.
What Works Well
The world-building, despite its initial infodump feel, does eventually create a unique and intriguing backdrop for the story. The idea of floating islands and mission-based survival is compelling. I also appreciate the anti-hero protagonist. He's not your typical righteous hero, and his internal struggles, even if not always perfectly executed, add a layer of complexity. The story has a great premise and an amazing amount of potential. It's refreshing to see a story that isn't afraid to go dark and explore morally grey characters. The unique setting and the promise of a survival game with high stakes kept me invested, at least for a while.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue is the inconsistency in the protagonist's characterization. The "split personality" feels more like a convenient plot device than a deeply explored psychological element. The protagonist's actions and motivations sometimes feel contradictory, and his "genius" intellect often manifests as convenient leaps of logic. The power scaling also becomes a concern, as the protagonist remains relatively weak even after hundreds of chapters, leading to a sense that the story may rush towards a rushed ending. Also, there are some translations that are very slow, making it hard to stay interested in the novel.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out that the story incorporates elements from other franchises, such as Marvel and Hunter X Hunter, blurring the line between original content and fanfiction.
Final Verdict
"Death Notice" is a mixed bag. It has a strong premise, a unique setting, and an anti-hero protagonist, but it suffers from inconsistent characterization, pacing issues, and questionable plot developments. While I enjoyed parts of the story, I ultimately found myself losing interest due to the aforementioned flaws. I'd give it a cautious recommendation to readers who enjoy dark fantasy with morally ambiguous characters, but be prepared for a potentially bumpy ride. I'm giving it a 3/5.
