My Thoughts on Cthulhu Gonfalon
"Cthulhu Gonfalon"… that title certainly grabs your attention, doesn't it? I dove into this web novel with a mix of excitement and trepidation, given the somewhat polarizing opinions surrounding it. After spending some time with it, I definitely have some thoughts.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise: reincarnation as a spirit taking over a jellyfish body. It felt fresh and different, especially with the "Cthulhu" tag hinting at some Lovecraftian horror. I was expecting a descent into madness, a story of cosmic dread, and maybe a few tentacles wreaking havoc. However, I quickly realized that the title is quite misleading.
What Works Well
Despite the misnomer, there are definitely some enjoyable aspects to "Cthulhu Gonfalon." Many seem to appreciate the MC's good-hearted nature. He isn't your typical ruthless protagonist; instead, he strives to be virtuous and just, which is a refreshing change of pace. The world-building, while not always consistent, has potential, drawing inspiration from Dungeons & Dragons' Forgotten Realms setting. The story also offers a unique take on the godhood trope, with the MC learning to navigate the divine landscape and build his own following. When the story hits its stride, it can be a fun and relaxing read, similar to "Release that Witch".
Areas of Concern
The biggest issue, and one that many others have pointed out, is the disconnect between the title and the actual story. The Lovecraftian elements are largely absent, and the MC's jellyfish form is more of a quirky starting point than a source of cosmic horror. I also noticed the translation quality is inconsistent, with name changes and awkward phrasing popping up. Furthermore, the plot and character development sometimes feel erratic, with inconsistencies and abrupt shifts in personality. The MC's sudden transformation from a semi-emotionless being into a more forgiving and "shounen-type" character can be jarring.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have mentioned specific plot points that highlight these inconsistencies. For example, the MC's decision to become a God of Theme Parks after initially pursuing the God of Ice path raises eyebrows, especially given prior knowledge of the challenges involved. There are also concerns about the MC's actions and their alignment with his supposed embodiment of justice.
Final Verdict
"Cthulhu Gonfalon" is a mixed bag. If you go in expecting a Lovecraftian horror story, you'll likely be disappointed. However, if you're open to a lighthearted fantasy with a unique premise and a virtuous protagonist, you might find something to enjoy. Just be prepared for some inconsistencies and translation quirks along the way. Overall, I'd say it's a decent read with potential, but it falls short of its initial promise.
