My Thoughts on Combatants Will Be Dispatched
"Combatants Will Be Dispatched!" definitely grabbed my attention with its blend of sci-fi and fantasy, seasoned with a heavy dose of comedy and ecchi. The premise alone, an evil organization dispatching agents to conquer a new world, is intriguing. I dove in expecting a wild ride, and that's largely what I got.
First Impressions
Initially, I found the humor a bit hit-or-miss. Some jokes landed perfectly, while others felt a little stale or repetitive. The main character, Agent Six, is… well, he's a scumbag, but in a strangely endearing way. It's the kind of humor that won't appeal to everyone, especially if you're easily put off by vulgarity or an MC who frequently objectifies women.
What Works Well
The comedy, when it hits, is genuinely hilarious. If you're a fan of the author's previous work, "KonoSuba," you'll likely appreciate the similar style of humor and the occasional self-referential jokes. I particularly enjoyed the dynamic between Agent Six and his android companion, Alice. Her dry wit and constant exasperation with his antics provide some of the best comedic moments. I also appreciate the world-building, which gradually unfolds to reveal a unique blend of technology and magic. The supporting cast, despite their flaws, are memorable and add to the overall chaotic charm of the story.
Areas of Concern
I did find the initial volumes somewhat weaker than later ones. The plot felt a little disjointed at times, and the "evil" organization didn't always feel particularly threatening. There's also the issue of character relevance. Some female characters seem to fade into the background after their initial introduction, which is a shame. And while I enjoy the MC's personality, I can see how his behavior might be off-putting to some readers.
Final Verdict
"Combatants Will Be Dispatched!" is a flawed but ultimately enjoyable series. If you're looking for a serious, plot-heavy fantasy novel, this isn't it. But if you're in the mood for some raunchy, irreverent humor with a dash of sci-fi and fantasy, I'd recommend giving it a try. Just be prepared for a protagonist who's more likely to grope a goddess than save the world.
