My Thoughts on Becoming Popular Through The “All Villains” Variety Show
This novel was quite the ride! "Becoming Popular Through The “All Villains” Variety Show" promises a unique blend of comedy, drama, and a dash of romance, and for the most part, it delivers. I went in expecting a lighthearted read, and I definitely got that, but there were also some surprisingly touching moments that caught me off guard.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked by the humor. The premise of a variety show featuring the most hated celebrities is inherently funny, and the author really leans into the absurdity of it all. The main character, Shang Lu, is invited to the show after realizing she's just a vicious supporting role in a novel. Instead of plotting revenge, she approaches the situation with curiosity and a devil-may-care attitude, which I found incredibly refreshing.
What Works Well
The comedy is definitely the strongest aspect of this novel. I found myself laughing out loud at Shang Lu's antics and the interactions between the variety show guests. The author does a great job of integrating the "barrage comments" style, making it feel like a genuine variety show experience. Beyond the humor, I appreciated the character development. Shang Lu's journey of self-discovery, shaking off the shackles of her family drama, and finding genuine connections was compelling. The supporting characters also get their time to shine, growing and evolving throughout the story. I also enjoyed the slow-burn romance between Shang Lu and Chi Yan. It felt natural and earned, which is a nice change of pace from the often-rushed romances in web novels.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the novel overall, I can see why some readers might find certain aspects lacking. The romance is definitely not the main focus, and some might find it too subtle or slow-paced. The focus on the variety show format can also feel repetitive at times. While the show is funny, it can overshadow the main plot, leading to a feeling of stagnation. Also, some people might find the MC's personality unlikeable.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers might be disappointed that the ex-fiancé doesn't get more retribution. Also, the MC's father is a terrible person to the end.
Final Verdict
Despite its minor flaws, "Becoming Popular Through The “All Villains” Variety Show" is a fun and heartwarming read. If you're looking for a novel with laugh-out-loud comedy, well-developed characters, and a unique premise, I'd definitely recommend giving it a try. Just don't expect a romance-heavy story, and be prepared for some repetitive comedy schticks along the way.
