My Thoughts on Baby’s Breath
"Baby's Breath" is a novel I dove into with a mix of excitement and trepidation, given the mixed, though mostly positive, reception it's received. It's a completed original work with an ongoing translation, and from what I've gathered, it's a cute, fluffy, and heartwarming story that's perfect for when you need a break from heavier reads.
First Impressions
The premise definitely hooked me. A calm, perhaps slightly naive MC who’s a cosplayer meets a seemingly cold ML who’s a drummer with a hidden soft side? Sounds like a recipe for delightful misunderstandings and sweet romance. The childhood friends/childhood love trope is also a big draw for me, so I was eager to see how it played out. The academy setting and a hint of cross-dressing added extra layers of intrigue.
What Works Well
The biggest strength of "Baby's Breath" seems to be its characters. The MC is consistently described as hardworking, endearing, and even a bit shameless, especially when it comes to free food! The ML, despite his initial aloofness, is apparently quite comical and gentle toward the MC. It seems the author does a good job of making them feel real, with flaws and aspirations that resonate. Many seem to agree that the story avoids excessive drama and angst, focusing instead on the genuine development of their relationship. The side plots, like their careers, add depth without overshadowing the romance, which is a big plus.
Areas of Concern
While many find the MC and ML to be endearing, some readers have been frustrated by the MC's selective memory regarding their childhood. The ML's tendency to jump to conclusions and misinterpret the MC's actions also seems to cause some irritation. It seems some readers have found the plot to be meandering or have had issues with the translation quality, which can definitely detract from the reading experience.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers mention specific plot points, such as the MC forgetting key events from their childhood summer, including a seafood allergy incident and the fact that he was pretending to be a girl. These memory lapses are viewed by some as a forced plot device. Also, the ML's overthinking and assumptions about the MC's feelings are highlighted as a source of potential frustration.
Final Verdict
Despite some potential pitfalls, "Baby's Breath" sounds like a charming and enjoyable read, especially if you're in the mood for a lighthearted rom-com with a focus on character development. While the plot might not be groundbreaking, the endearing characters and fluffy romance seem to make it a worthwhile experience. I'm definitely adding this to my reading list!
