My Thoughts on A Filthy Rich Hamster in the Apocalypse
"A Filthy Rich Hamster in the Apocalypse" is quite the ride, a fluffy, sometimes bewildering, and ultimately unique take on the end of the world. It's a novel that definitely has its quirks, and whether you love them or hate them seems to be the deciding factor on your overall enjoyment.
First Impressions
Going in, I expected a lighthearted apocalyptic story with a cute hamster protagonist. I wasn't entirely wrong, but I also wasn't prepared for the sheer amount of fluff. The initial chapters are undeniably adorable, introducing Wu Yi, our hamster MC, and Nie Xiao, the doting ML. However, the "daddy" dynamic and the MC's self-referential "baby" talk can be a bit much, even for someone who enjoys a bit of sweetness.
What Works Well
Despite some of the cringier elements, the novel does a lot right. The world-building, particularly the transition from a zombie apocalypse to an interstellar setting, is surprisingly well-executed. It's a bold move that pays off by injecting fresh life into a familiar genre. I found the side characters to be a real highlight. They're well-developed and contribute significantly to the overall narrative. The action scenes are surprisingly vivid and exciting, and the author doesn't shy away from creating a truly formidable antagonist. There's also a genuine sense of camaraderie and teamwork among the characters, which is refreshing in a genre often filled with grimdark survivalism.
Areas of Concern
The biggest sticking point for many, myself included, is the MC's character. While his cuteness is initially appealing, the lack of significant character development can become grating. The "daddy" dynamic, while some find it endearing, can feel awkward and borderline inappropriate, especially as the romantic relationship develops. Furthermore, the plot, while creative, can sometimes feel convoluted and riddled with inconsistencies. The addition of numerous characters halfway through the novel can also make it difficult to keep track of everyone and their relationships.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several readers have mentioned the plot twist involving the interstellar origins of the apocalypse. The source of the virus is tied to a mad villain from another galaxy. Also, the tiger that appears in the story transforms into a handsome uncle.
Final Verdict
"A Filthy Rich Hamster in the Apocalypse" is a flawed but ultimately enjoyable novel. If you're looking for a serious, gritty apocalyptic story, this isn't it. However, if you're willing to embrace the fluff, forgive the occasional plot hole, and enjoy a unique blend of genres, you might find yourself pleasantly surprised. It's a story that made me smile, occasionally cringe, and ultimately left me feeling satisfied with the ending. I'd recommend it to readers who enjoy lighthearted stories with OP MCs and a heavy dose of fluff. Just be prepared for a wild ride.
