My Thoughts on Waist
"Waist" is a wild ride, and I mean wild. Going in, I knew it was going to be heavy on the adult themes, but I wasn't quite prepared for the emotional rollercoaster that came with it. It's definitely a novel that knows what it wants to be, and it commits wholeheartedly.
First Impressions
The opening chapters definitely grab your attention. There's no slow burn here; we're thrown right into the thick of a marriage built on anything but love, and the initial interactions between the leads are, to put it mildly, intense. It's a bold start, and it certainly sets the tone for the rest of the story.
What Works Well
The author clearly knows how to write compelling, if not always likeable, characters. I found myself oddly invested in their messy relationship, even when I was cringing at their choices. The emotional beats, especially when the male lead experiences amnesia, are genuinely touching. The shift in his personality creates a compelling dynamic, and I could definitely understand the female lead's (and many readers') emotional attachment to this "puppy" version of him. The story is also undeniably engaging. I found myself quickly drawn into the drama and eager to see how everything would unfold, despite some reservations.
Areas of Concern
While the heavy focus on smut is clearly a draw for many, the plot does suffer a bit. There are some noticeable holes, particularly concerning the ex-girlfriend storyline. Also, the male lead's reversion to his original personality after regaining his memories is jarring. It creates a whiplash effect, especially considering how much I had grown to like his amnesiac self.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
The male lead's attitude shift after regaining his memories is brutal. The scene where he mocks the female lead about her relationship with his amnesiac self is genuinely heartbreaking, and the female lead's complicated feelings towards both versions of him add another layer of complexity to their dynamic.
Final Verdict
"Waist" is not for the faint of heart. It's a melodramatic, smut-filled story with flawed characters and a plot that occasionally takes a backseat to the steamy scenes. However, if you're looking for a novel that's unafraid to push boundaries and explore complex emotions, you might find yourself surprisingly captivated. Just be prepared to shed a few tears along the way. It's a flawed but fascinating read.
