My Thoughts on The Transmigrated Senior Martial Brother
"The Transmigrated Senior Martial Brother" is a novel I approached with a mix of excitement and trepidation, given its mixed reception. While the premise of a surgeon transmigrating into a xianxia world is intriguing, the execution, in my opinion, leaves much to be desired.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked by the idea of a protagonist grappling with his new reality and bringing his past-life skills to bear. However, this aspect quickly faded into the background. The early chapters showed promise, but the narrative soon became convoluted, hopping between dimensions and introducing a plethora of characters who vanished as quickly as they appeared.
What Works Well
I must give credit where it's due. The translation is commendable, making the story readable even when the plot becomes muddled. Some readers also appreciated the initial concept of the MC needing time to adapt to his new body and cultivation. There is also an appeal to the yandere ML for those who enjoy that trope in particular, however, I found it to be poorly executed.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue lies with the plot and character development. The story feels disjointed, lacking a central, cohesive narrative. The constant introduction of new realms and side characters, only to abandon them later, creates a sense of incompleteness. The ML's character is also problematic. While the yandere archetype can be compelling, his actions often felt manipulative and even abusive, making it difficult to root for the relationship. Furthermore, the MC's personality comes off as cold and detached, hindering any emotional connection. The author fails to show the MC using his surgeon skills in his new life, making it seem like a pointless character trait.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several readers have pointed out the inclusion of r*pe as a plot device, which is a major turn-off and a serious red flag. The ML frames the MC to keep him isolated, which is also an issue for many readers. These elements contribute to a toxic dynamic that detracts from the overall enjoyment.
Final Verdict
Ultimately, "The Transmigrated Senior Martial Brother" falls short of its potential. While the translation and initial premise are promising, the messy plot, underdeveloped characters, and questionable relationship dynamics make it a difficult read. I would only recommend this to readers who are specifically looking for a dark, yandere-focused story and are willing to overlook its flaws. For others, there are better xianxia novels out there.
