My Thoughts on The Only Normal Human In The Universe
"The Only Normal Human In The Universe" promised a cute, fluffy read with a unique premise, and for the most part, it delivered. As someone who enjoys a relaxing story with minimal drama, I found myself drawn to the hamster spirit protagonist navigating a futuristic world. However, like many others, I had some mixed feelings along the way.
First Impressions
The initial chapters were definitely engaging. The setup, with a 10,000-year-old demon hamster spirit transmigrating into a human body in a world prejudiced against those with animal characteristics, was quite intriguing. I appreciated that the protagonist, despite his initial cluelessness about human society, wasn't portrayed as completely inept. His rational temperament allowed him to cleverly navigate certain situations, and I was immediately invested in seeing how he would adapt.
What Works Well
The cuteness factor is undeniably high in this novel. The protagonist's naivete, combined with his genuine desire to help his new mother, made him an endearing character. Many readers praised the familial love aspects, and I agree that the Cheng family dynamics were a definite highlight. The translation quality also deserves a shout-out; it really enhanced the reading experience. The story is at its best when focused on the slice-of-life elements and the sweet interactions between the main characters. The ML is a strong and protective force in the MC's life, and I found their dynamic to be entertaining and often very funny.
Areas of Concern
While the beginning held a lot of promise, some aspects of the story felt rushed, especially towards the end. The later part of the MC's college life, the impact of the transformation potion, and the birth of beast mechas felt like afterthoughts. The ML's character development also raised some concerns for me. While his possessiveness can be seen as a trope, it sometimes veered into uncomfortable territory. I, like some other readers, found his jealousy a bit excessive, and the lack of character growth in this area was disappointing. There were also some plot holes and unresolved plot lines that detracted from the overall experience.
