My Thoughts on Teihen Ryoushu
First Impressions
"Teihen Ryoushu" grabbed my attention as a lighthearted comedy with a dense protagonist at its core. The premise seemed simple enough: a seemingly incompetent MC somehow stumbles into success, leading to hilarious misunderstandings and a devoted following. I went in expecting a fun, quick read, and for a while, it definitely delivered on that promise.
What Works Well
The initial chapters are genuinely funny. The humor derives from the MC's obliviousness and the ridiculous situations he finds himself in. The pacing is fast, and the short chapters make it easy to consume. The novel doesn't take itself too seriously, which is a major strength. It embraces its absurdity and focuses on delivering comedic moments. I found myself chuckling at the sheer ridiculousness of it all. I also appreciated how the MC, despite his lack of awareness, manages to grow as a person throughout the story.
Areas of Concern
However, my enjoyment waned as the story progressed. Several readers mentioned a significant shift in tone and plot later on, and I have to agree. What started as a lighthearted comedy veered into bizarre territory, with increasingly outlandish events and character developments. This shift felt jarring and detracted from the initial charm of the novel. The kingdom-building aspects, which initially piqued my interest, turned out to be quite shallow. Also, the reliance on misunderstandings as the sole driver of the plot started to feel repetitive and forced.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, brace yourselves. I need to address the elephant in the room – or rather, the mutated monster lurking in the final arc. Apparently, the story takes a wild turn towards the end, involving black holes, nuclear fission, a tyrant king turning into a big-titted goddess, and even… a baby with the main character in another dimension. Honestly, I'm not sure what to make of it. This drastic shift in tone and plot clearly alienated some readers, and I can understand why.
Final Verdict
"Teihen Ryoushu" is a mixed bag. The beginning is genuinely funny and enjoyable, offering a lighthearted escape with its ridiculous premise and dense MC. However, the later parts of the story take a sharp turn into bizarre territory, potentially ruining the experience for some readers. If you're looking for a short, silly comedy and don't mind a hefty dose of absurdity, "Teihen Ryoushu" might be worth a try. Just be prepared for a wild ride and a potentially disappointing ending. Overall, I'd give it a cautious recommendation with a rating of 3/5.
