My Thoughts on Slaying Immortal
"Slaying Immortal" is a whirlwind of xianxia revenge, and after diving in, I definitely have some thoughts. This story packs a punch, but it's not without its flaws. Overall, it's an engaging, albeit rushed, read.
First Impressions
The premise immediately grabbed me: a determined female lead seeking retribution against seemingly insurmountable odds. Bai Zhi's journey from weak to strong is the core of this story, and the promise of satisfying vengeance definitely piqued my interest. The short length was also appealing, as I was looking for a quick dive into a new world.
What Works Well
Bai Zhi is undeniably a badass. Her motivations are clear, her drive is unwavering, and watching her systematically dismantle her enemies is, admittedly, quite satisfying. I found myself rooting for her every step of the way. The story doesn't shy away from the darker aspects of revenge, which adds a layer of depth. For a short story, it manages to deliver a complete arc of vengeance, even if it's a bit hurried. The fast pace, while a point of contention for some, kept me hooked and made for an exciting read.
Areas of Concern
The pacing is definitely the biggest issue. While the speed makes it an easy read, it also sacrifices depth. World-building feels a little thin, and some of the plot points feel conveniently placed. While I appreciated the concise nature of the novel, I also felt that the ending was abrupt and didn't fully resolve all the plot threads, leaving me with unanswered questions and a slight sense of dissatisfaction. I also felt that some of the characters were a little one-dimensional, serving more as plot devices than fully fleshed-out individuals.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
I will not be including any spoilers in this review.
Final Verdict
"Slaying Immortal" is a thrilling, albeit flawed, xianxia revenge story. If you're looking for a quick, action-packed read with a strong female lead, this might be right up your alley. However, be prepared for a rushed plot, some convenient plot devices, and an ending that might leave you wanting more. I'd give it a solid 3.8 out of 5 stars. It's an enjoyable experience, but don't expect a deeply immersive or intricately detailed world.
