My Thoughts on Seized by the System
"Seized by the System" presents a unique premise: a lazy MC whose body is taken over by a chivalrous AI system. I went into it expecting a fun ride, and while it had its moments, I ultimately found it a bit uneven. The concept is definitely intriguing, but the execution left me wanting more.
First Impressions
The initial chapters hooked me with the novelty of the situation. The world-building, a blend of modern-day Earth with emerging cultivation elements and influences from stories like "Journey to the West" and "Boku no Hero Academia," felt fresh. The idea of an OP protagonist who is simultaneously a captive NEET is a clever twist on the usual system novel tropes.
What Works Well
The humor is a major draw. The banter between the MC and the system can be genuinely funny, though the effectiveness seems to vary from reader to reader. I appreciated the unique power scaling system, using water levels (Rice, Mug, Pond, Lake, etc.) to give a more relatable sense of power progression. The slice-of-life aspects, while sometimes feeling like filler, offer a relaxed pace that some readers might find enjoyable. Some readers have also noted that the plot becomes more intricate as the story progresses, with plans and schemes unfolding gradually.
Areas of Concern
The lack of a clear, overarching goal became a problem for me. The story often feels like a series of loosely connected events, lacking a central conflict to drive the narrative forward. The MC's lack of agency can also be frustrating; he's often just along for the ride, making it difficult to feel invested in his journey. Some readers also found the humor to be "meh" and the translation quality inconsistent, which could contribute to the dialogue falling flat. Finally, it has been pointed out that the story takes on a nationalistic tone as it progresses, which may bother some readers.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some reviews mentioned the story taking a dark turn with forced chipping and remote "liquidation" of those deemed undesirable. This is a significant plot point that may influence your decision to read the novel.
Final Verdict
"Seized by the System" is a mixed bag. It offers a unique premise, enjoyable humor, and a fresh take on the system novel genre. However, the lack of a clear goal, inconsistent pacing, and potential tonal shifts later in the story may deter some readers. If you're looking for a lighthearted, comedic read with a unique concept, it might be worth checking out, but be aware of its potential shortcomings. I'd give it a tentative 3/5.
