My Thoughts on Please Continue Protecting Me
"Please Continue Protecting Me" is a completed josei romance novel that I recently dove into, and it was quite the experience. With a blend of sweet moments, a protective male lead, and a touch of tragedy, it aims to deliver a heartwarming story. However, it's not without its flaws.
First Impressions
Right off the bat, I was drawn in by the promise of a "guy chases girl" trope with a doting, almost clingy, male lead. The synopsis hinted at a story filled with flashbacks, which intrigued me, but also gave me pause, as I've found that poorly executed flashbacks can be jarring. The tags like "beautiful female lead," "bodyguards," and "death of loved ones" painted a picture of a dramatic yet fluffy read, and I was eager to see if it lived up to that.
What Works Well
The undeniable strength of this novel lies in the interactions between the main characters, Nie Fei Zhan and Rong Mo. The male lead's devotion is definitely a highlight, and I can see why many readers describe their interactions as "dog food" – they're undeniably sweet! The female lead, despite her vulnerabilities stemming from past trauma and disabilities, is portrayed as inwardly strong, which I appreciated. The story is undeniably cute and romantic, with many describing it as "fluffy" and "heartwarming".
Areas of Concern
While the romance is a major draw, I did notice some areas where the novel stumbles. The pacing, particularly in the first half, felt a bit off. The constant flashbacks, while intended to build the story, often felt crude and repetitive, making it difficult to fully immerse myself in the present-day narrative. There were also moments where the writing felt inconsistent, with conflicting descriptions and a lack of depth in character development. Some readers may find certain interactions between the leads cringey, and the ending may feel rushed.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out that the novel constantly compares the main characters to a side couple, which detracts from the main leads' romantic development. The lack of background information on the side couple made their interactions feel less special and ultimately ruined the momentum of the main story for some.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Please Continue Protecting Me" is an okay novel. It's a light, fluffy read with a sweet romance that many will find enjoyable. However, the pacing issues, repetitive flashbacks, and somewhat inconsistent writing hold it back from being truly great. If you're looking for a quick, low-angst romance with a doting male lead, this might be worth a try. Just be prepared to overlook some of its shortcomings. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
